New things are always brewing in the social media world. Here are a few takeaways for the current month.
Instagram Introduces Teen Accounts
In order to create safe experiences online, Instagram is starting to roll out Teen Accounts, which will have built-in protections to limit content and the ability to be contacted. Teenagers from 13-17 will automatically be placed into Teen Accounts, and anybody under 16 will need parental permission to change certain settings.
Interestingly, teen accounts will prompt them to leave the app after 60 minutes each day. Other features include:
- Private accounts by default
- Messaging restrictions
- Limited interactions (no tags or mentions from people they don’t follow).
Teen accounts should be rolled out in Western countries later this year.

YouTube allows creators to edit-out certain rule-breaking elements
Takedowns on YouTube usually happen as a result of a creator violating Community Guidelines. As of September 2024, YouTube is testing a new feature that would allow creators to edit some of their content for certain Community Guidelines violations. The idea is that if the problematic portion(s) of the video are resolved, restrictions can be removed [and put back on YouTube].
